Sol LeWho!?

Sol LeWitt is an artist most well known for his conceptual wall drawings. The drawings are created by other artists following a set of simple but open ended instructions. The different interpretations of the instructions make each installation unique. In this project we were given six slips of paper with sets of instructions and six large sheets of paper. Some of these instruction were very clear while others were in german and had to be translated. The instructions and their corresponding drawings are displayed below:

rote, gerade Linien, etwa 30 Zentimeter lang, parallel, nicht berührend, gleichmaßig beabstandet, ausgelöscht, mit der größten Dichte auf der gesamten Papieroberfläche geradeaus gezeichnet eine halbe Seite vertikal eine halbe Seite horizontal

red straight lines, 30 centimeters long, parallel, not touching, evenly spaced, obscured, largest density on entire paper surface straight drawn half page vertical half page horizontal.

  1. Draw a circle in the center of the page
  2. Draw two more shapes, any shape any size
  3. Add three colors to this drawing only
  4. Make sensitive marks, think about how you handle a snake or reptile
  5. You can mix your three colors, but only on the page, not before
  6. Draw 8 lines, all in different directions

All of the dots should be connected by straight lines.25007-Instruction Drawing #102708b (after Sol Lewitt) Draw a big square that is not centered on the page. Draw a line though the square that bisects the page diagonally into unequal parts. That line is a tangent to a large circle that doesn’t overlap the square. Draw a smaller circle off-center inside this circle. Draw a tangent to the smaller circle so that one corner of the square lies on the line. Draw a triangle that fills one side of the paper whose corner is the center of the square.circlecircle50/50 – A square of 20” divided horizontally into two equal parts. The top half matte black. The bottom half glossy black. Within a circle, draw 500 black, straight lines and 500 black, not straight lines. All lines are randomly spaced and equally distributed.glossymatte

Staking the Claim

Today we screen printed our flag design, see Savannah’s post for more info, onto nine diamond shaped flags and most of our vests. We used a combination of electric green and royal blue ink which created a super vibrant design. Our group worked really well as a team today, we each had a part to play in the screen printing process, and we all contributed a significant amount. If anyone of us was missing, I doubt today would have run as smoothly as it did.

After class we created our flags and installed them in our territory. Clara and I arranged the flags so that they hung off the berry tree, one of the central points of our territory.

As we were installing our flags we were approach by an administrator named Rick McLay. He asked what we were doing and if he could take pictures to use for promotion of Alfred University. One of his pictures of our process is below:

Story of the Week 10/8/18

Today I made myself a fancy breakfast consisting of a poached egg on avocado toast with guacamole and chipotle sauce. It is one of my favorite healthy breakfast options, and is absolutely delicious.

My Guacamole Recipe:

  • 1 avocado
  • 1/2 lime
  • salt to taste (about 2 tsp)

Cut and mash the avocado, squeeze in the lime, and mix in the salt. Cover with plastic and let sit at room temperature for 15-60 min.

Julia Child’s Method for Poached Eggs

Bring a pot of water to a boil. Make a hole in the eggshell with a pin. Place the egg (with the shell) in the boiling water for 10 seconds. Remove the egg from the water, carefully. Once the egg is cool, crack the egg into simmering water and let poach for about 3 minutes.

Chipotle Sauce Recipe

  • 1/4 can of chipotle chilies with adobo sauce
  • 3 Tbsp olive oil
  • 2 crushed garlic cloves
  • 1/2 onion
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1 Tbsp cumin
  • 1 Tbsp salt
  • 1 Tbsp brown sugar

Use a blender to combine

Exquisite Futures

On Monday we made a zine (magazine) by combining all of our pages that our group members created. We chose to cut copies of our pages into strips and weave and intertwine them together to form a single story out of our individual narratives. More information and pictures of our zine can be found at the link below:

We also created a design for a flag to be placed in our territory. This design is a reference to one of our first performances in the space. More information and pictures can be found at the link below:

Into the Future

This week we created a story about what are territory might be like in the future. We needed to create three 8 1/2 by 11 sheets of paper with text and pictures telling our story. In addition we created a third symbol representing the future of our territory. See Past and Present for the other two symbols. My story is that in the future a species of alien invades earth and takes over, then many years later another more technologically developed alien species takes over the planet. This alien species eventually wipes itself out and the planet is taken over by genetically enhanced creatures. The tunnel is present in all three of the pages. The creek makes a larger and larger canyon over the years.

Final Pages

Story of the Week 10/1/18

On Saturday, my roommate Emelia and I went to The Duke House in Wellsville. It was the most adorable little eatery. We got Bourbon Black Tea and slices of carrot and coconut cake. The Bourbon Black Tea is a blend of indian and chinese teas. One of the chinese teas in it is called lapsang souchong, it is a tea where the leaves are dried using smoke. The coconut cake was so wonderful, It had a delicious coconut whipped cream on top. Everything about The Duke House is so cute and it’s perfect if you want to have a fancy tea party.

More Real than Real

Today our group was tasked with re-making our territory installation into an absurd story. I decided to make a creature out of the cardboard trees. It may have been a tree at some point, a troll, or maybe it’s a robot just sitting by the stream. This and more is all documented in full in the link below:

Space within a Space

This week our group, The Red Coats, reunited and installed a representation of our territory in Harder Hall. We decided we wanted to focus on the creek and the natural surroundings. I worked on fabricating cardboard and creating trees. I also did some work on making the arch. Our full process and final installation is documented in the link below:

Story of the Week 9/24/18

New York City Food Tour

With the foundations group we went to NYC for the weekend and saw a LOT of art and ate some great food. Here is a summary of my little food adventure.

Wisefish Poke

This was the best food find this trip! It was super tiny and quiet, we got there right as it opened and I got a bowl called West Swell with white rice. It had ahi tuna, sweet onion, herb mix masago, wisefish sauce, and wasabi avocado cream. The wasabi avocado cream was soooo good. Perfect balance of creamy and spicy. I will definitely be returning here to try something else off their menu. Price for the meal was $12.

Look at that gorgeous poke bowl!

Momofuku Milk Bar

I had watched the Chef’s Table episode and was super excited to try something here. The prices were so unreasonably high, a single slice of pie is $6. I split one with Clara, and it was delicious, but still… $9 for a slice of cake and $49 for a whole cake! I was a little shocked.

Cosmic Diner

After walking for a few blocks after getting off the subway at Columbus Circle, we decided to stop and eat at the Cosmic Diner. I got one of their specials, a grilled chicken panini with avocado. The bread was fantastic, probably my favorite part of the meal. The menu was kind of odd though, it had a TON of dishes on it, and they were all really diverse. Food was decent but I wish the fries were jazzed up with some kind of cool sauce or something. Price for the meal was $16

The Smith

We went here for brunch on Sunday, I had pancakes with whipped ricotta, toasted pecans, and an absolutely delicious salted caramel sauce. I think it was a bit overpriced, $17 for a stack of pancakes, but the flavors were great and it was a really enjoyable meal.

Wegmans

We stopped at Wegmans on the way back, I got a mixed raw salmon sushi tray and a pack of peanut butter M&M’s. I had not tried that particular sushi mix before and it was pretty good 🙂 Price was $13.
